Traumatic Brain Injury Vision Rehabilitation

Post Concussion Syndrome and Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation

“I am able to read again. This is such a pleasure that I used to enjoy. I am also able to drive at night without fear of having an accident.”

After a head injury, whiplash, or stroke, seeing can change dramatically. Reading, driving, and even shopping can become confusing because of problems with eye muscle coordination or loss of any of the other 7 Visual Abilities. For over thirty years at Cook Vision Therapy Center, Inc., we have been helping closed-head-injury patients to see to put the world back together again.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

TBI is typically caused by blows, bumps, or jolts to the head and body, most often during falls, sports, or accidents. Since over half of your brain is involved with the use of vision, it is no surprise that TBI can disrupt and overwhelm seeing whenever your eyes are open.

Concussion and Post Concussion Syndrome

Concussion is a less severe form of TBI often reducing brain function for days or weeks before resolving. When symptoms persist for over a month (three months according to many authorities) the diagnosis of post-concussion syndrome may apply. If so, we will suggest rehabilitation depending on how dramatically the symptoms impact your life.

Visual Symptoms of TBI

  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision
  • Light Sensitivity
  • Increased by using your eyes:
    • Headaches
    • Dizziness
    • Loss of balance
    • Nausea
    • Confusion
  • When driving:
    • Uncertainty
    • Anxiety
  • When reading:
    • Premature fatigue
    • Eyestrain
    • Loss of place
    • Loss of concentration and comprehension

Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation (NOR)

Vision consists of two systems: 1) a central system used to find meaning in details and 2) a peripheral system used to direct balance, depth perception, and action. After TBI these two systems can interfere with one another causing confusion and difficulty with sustained attention. Rehabilitation uses lenses, prisms, instruments, filters and individually programmed vision therapy activities. The goal: getting your life back with dependable, comfortable vision.
